Radio Goethe podcast

Radio Goethe delivers again with another new podcast this week. Arndt says it’s music to sit back and relax to, but there’s still a full range of music spread out over the hour-long program. You’ll hear some songs from the smoother side of the spectrum (like Wolfsheim’s synthpop) and then opposite harder end (like metal from Megaherz and End Of Green), and everything in between. It’s yet another example of the tried and true eclectic mix of German sounds that Radio Goethe has become known for.

Radio Goethe podcast

Radio Goethe’s weekly podcast is online once again. This time around, we get lots of industrial and EBM plus a few tracks bringing in some guitars for a slightly heavier sound. It’s a great mix overall.

Take a moment to explore KDA
My favorite track on the podcast is “Allein” by KDA. They are a terrific electro-metal band from Berlin, and as of late 2007, they were working on songs for a new album. No further announcements have been made since then, but you can still hear some of KDA’s new music on their MySpace page.

One of KDA’s most interesting songs was a remix they did for the Corvus Corax In Electronica remix album from 2000 (since Norri is also a member of CC). Check it out, if you can find it.

Special live Radio Goethe show tomorrow

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

There’s a very special Radio Goethe spotlight show tomorrow, Sunday the 27th. It focuses on Lili Marleen and Peat Bog Soldiers, 2 songs that became very popular after the end of World War II. They had a very deep impact on European society, especially in Germany, and Arndt will be talking about them and playing many different versions of these songs over the course of 2 hours.

Tune in to KUSF at 90.3 FM in San Francisco or online around the world at KUSF.org (click “Listen Now” in the menu). The show will be broadcast from 2:00 to 4:00 PM Pacific which equates to 5 to 7 PM Eastern.

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Radio Goethe at the German Embassy

Arndt Peltner, Radio Goethe’s producer, will be appearing at the German embassy in Washington DC on Saturday, May 3rd for a special DJ set from 10 AM until 3 PM. Aside from hearing some great music from some of the most creative musicians in Germany, you will also be able to sample German food, learn a lot about German culture and the work the embassy does, and tour the Ambassador’s residence during this time. I will be in town for this event also, so come join us for a day filled with culture.

EU Open House
This event is part of the EU Open House in which all the European embassies in the city are open to the public for the day. Everyone is invited to come in to experience what it’s like behind the gates and to learn about their respective countries and cultures. This open house event kicks off a week of European celebrations which ultimately lead up to Europe Day on May 9th.

Getting to the embassy
The German embassy is located just outside the main hub of Washington DC at 4645 Reservoir Road, NW. You can also see a list of all the European embassy locations and their events for the day here on CulturalTourismDC.org.

Step back in time: Medieval music on Radio Goethe

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Radio Goethe podcast

This week’s Radio Goethe podcast takes us into the realm of old medieval sounds. Whether it’s pagan folk or medieval metal, there are plenty of modern day bands that are strongly influenced by the music of past centuries. They use old instruments that you just don’t find these days, often hand-made, and some musicians even go as far as to sing in old languages or dialects and take their lyrics from ancient texts. This is a really fascinating genre of music which doesn’t usually get much attention outside of central Europe, but it’s great to listen to and broaden your horizons. Check it out now on RadioGoethe.org or iTunes.
