Dog Eared Pages - Believe

Dog Eared Pages is a punk band from the port city of Kiel and they are getting ready to release their new album Believe. It will be out on October 19th throughout Germany on Coast Rock Records. Their release party on the 19th will be attended by other fellow punk bands like KellerChaos and NM50.

This isn’t really my style so I won’t say too much, but if you’re into punk (I know some of you are) check out some of the songs from Believe on DEP’s MySpace page. They’ve also got some videos on their site.

DEP has some CDs for sale on Interpunk.com which makes their music available to fans in the U.S. and worldwide. Hopefully Believe will be available there soon, so remember the link.

Flake helps release music from the Feeling B archives

Feeling B - Grün & Blau

Some of you know that Rammstein’s keyboardist Christian “Flake” Lorenz was a member of the East-German punk band Feeling B back in his younger days, long before Rammstein was ever thought of. Not many people have had the opportunity to hear many of the older Feeling B recordings, and then the band split up in 1993 when Flake later became part of Rammstein. Skip ahead five albums, and we arrive at the image of Rammstein on hiatus after releasing Rosenrot. The band members had a lot of free time on their hands. Some of them spent it relaxing and some of them spent it working on other musical projects. Flake spent a good part of his time digging through his archives to find the old Feeling B music.

Grün & Blau is partially a retrospective of Feeling B’s past songs and partially the long-awaited debut of some songs that were long thought to be lost. The album contains thirteen songs that Flake mixed and remastered so they sound more like how the band originally envisioned them years ago. There will be 2 versions available: The standard jewelcase version will be released on October 19th (according to most sources I’ve seen). The limited edition version will be accompanied by a hardcover book (some sources say 120 page, some say 160) where Flake discusses Feeling B, which will be released on November 9th.

Check out Feeling B’s MySpace page to hear what Flake’s music used to sound like. He has certainly come a long way!

Die Ärzte new album Jazz Ist Anders

Die Ärzte - Jazz Ist Anders

Is that a new CD or the pizza I ordered? That’s what I think of when I look at the cover of the new Die Ärzte album Jazz Ist Anders. The graphic art theme for the album is clearly inspired by a pizzeria, and the band’s website matches, too. In fact, the vinyl version of the album actually comes in a pizza box! Unfortunately, a round piece of vinyl doesn’t taste quite as good as pizza does, but it sure sounds a whole lot better.

Jazz Ist Anders is Die Ärzte’s 11th full-length studio release and contains 16 songs including the single “Junge” on track 6. Their sound hasn’t changed at all really, still the energetic punk-rock we’re familiar with. The album will hit stores across Europe in just less than a month on November 2nd. You can already hear a few new songs on the band’s MySpace page.

Die Ärzte - Jazz Ist Anders tracklist:
01. Himmelblau
02. Lied vom Scheitern
03. Breit
04. Lasse redn
05. Die ewige Maitresse
06. Junge
07. Nur einen Kuss
08. Perfekt
09. Heulerei
10. Licht am Ende des Sarges
11. Niedliches Liebeslied
12. Deine Freundin (wäre mir zu anstrengend)
13. Allein
14. Tu das nicht
15. Living Hell
16. Vorbei ist vorbei

Die Ärzte single “Junge” in support of new album

Die Ärzte - Junge

Die Ärzte is heading towards an album release on November 2nd, but first they’re doing a bit of promotion with the first single from the new album. “Junge” has already been playing on the airwaves in Germany since August, but the single is just now going to be released this Friday, October 5th. Aside from the title track, the “Junge” single contains 2 B-sides which will not appear on the forthcoming album.

The “Junge” video looks like a scene straight out of Dawn of the Dead. There are zombies roaming the streets destroying everything in sight. As the video progresses, they turn other people into zombies and eventually overpower the band who are perched on top of a bus. Farin Urlaub never stood a chance.

Let’s Start A Fire: Fiddler’s Green - Drive Me Mad

Fiddler's Green

I’m not really a lonely type of guy. I prefer to spend my time around people even if I don’t know them yet. But I do my best thinking when I’m alone. Except I’m only good for a while until boredom sets in. I’ve got to occupy my mind and focus on something. That something has always been music. I write, but I don’t do it to fight boredom. (I’ve always had to queue up six or seven CDs before my writing sessions.) Music keeps me busy, but most of all, it makes me feel like I’m not alone.

Part of not feeling alone means belonging to something bigger than yourself. A lot of people look to the church. In my late teens, I looked to punk music. I fell in love with a band called The Dropkick Murphys. To this day, I can pop in their live CD and seconds later, I’m in the bar, enjoying a pint of the good stuff, listening to them play with a raucous crowd around me. Is it the best music I’ve ever heard? Maybe, maybe not. My point is that is doesn’t matter – it makes me smile. It makes me feel something great.

When Greg told me he was checking out a band called Fiddler’s Green a while ago, I’d swore I’d heard of them. I mean, I had to. That was the sort of shit I listened to. He listened to Wumpscut while I skanked around the room next door. And as much as I love the stuff, a lot of punk (and Irish folk) bands sound the same when you remove the vocals. It’s easy for the mainstream music fan to brush aside this type of music as a rehash. I can’t tell you how many iPods I’ve seen with mislabeled tracks. To them, it’s just another band from Ireland. Except Fiddler’s Green isn’t from Ireland.

They’re a bunch of dudes from Germany, that for some reason, wanted to do something different. When I tried to find out via their website, I was faced with something I’ve seen a hundred times before. A press release covering their newest album instead of an actual history of the band or hell, just an explanation on why the fuck anyone in Germany would play Irish music. (Although, I’d say almost all of my Irish friends are actually half German, half Irish. Maybe two great tastes that go great together?) So, I did all I could do. I got my hands on their new album.

Fiddler's Green - Drive Me Mad

Drive Me Mad is fucking amazing. To start, I picked two tracks, Long Gone and Captain Song, at random. I didn’t even make it through both songs. I knew that I didn’t have to. I was already sitting there in that bar in my head listening to the band. And I had a magical pint of stout that never spilled when I danced amongst the crowd. Oh, Fiddler’s Green. You guys really know how to make me smile. The album is good to the last track. It’s got that diverse range you expect when you pop in a CD like this one. I won’t go into detail, but I will issue an apology. That aforementioned press release, while cheesy, was spot-fucking-on.

So, here’s the bad news: They’re another German band that isn’t on the road to US popularity. There are lots of bands over in the States that do what Fiddler’s Green does, if only a fraction as well. If I hand their CD to a friend (like I already have), I have to explain that we’ll never be able to see them in concert. And trust me, this is a band I can’t wait to see live. If their entire catalog is half as rocking as this new album, they could easily headline a bar tour over here in the US in an ideal world. But it’s a hard sell – try getting a bunch of Americans to listen to any German band. In that ideal world, you would Radio Raheem it and walk up the street with a boom box blasting Fiddler’s Green. But due to America’s public disturbance laws (drafted after New Kids on the Block rose to popularity), you can’t do that. You’ve got to find another way to spread the good word. And you should, as the guys of Fiddler’s Green have done all they needed to do by making a kick ass album. It’s time to… well, you know.

Bottom Line: Hand someone the CD and don’t tell them a damn thing about it until they’re smiling. (Which will be about one minute and thirty four seconds after they decide on a track.)

EA 80 - Reise

I first heard about the German punk band EA 80 a few years ago from my friend Mikki over at DeutschMusikLand.com. It seems that I had forgotten about them for a while, but once again the band is on my mind with their new album. Reise was release on Friday, August 17th, over in Germany. According to their label, Slowboy Records, the album has been released in 4 different formats: 2 CD versions and 2 vinyl versions. As far as I can tell, the CD versions each contain the same 11 songs and play for 42 minutes. The regular vinyl is pretty much the same, while the limited edition LP is on white vinyl (instead of the usual black) and contains special artwork. Unfortunately, none of the places I have searched has the actual tracklisting posted, but I will find that out for you soon. I received a reply from Slowboy Records with the album tracklist.

Reise tracklist
01. Zum Ausgangspunkt
02. Schein-Bar
03. Tunnel
04. Nicht Mit Dir
05. Trashfest
06. Rückfahrschein
07. Schlechter Abzug
08. Selbstumdrehung
09. Vollendet, Trotzdem Kurz
10. Big Ben
11. Sommerjugend

One man’s journey from Speedfolk to Goth Metal

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Arndt from Radio Goethe reports that Peter Müller (a.k.a. Peter Kafka or Peter Pathos), former singer of Fiddler’s Green, has joined a gothic-rock band and is also the new singer of Lacrimas Profundere. Upon a bit of research, it looks like the gothic band Peter is now involved with is called Beloved Enemy. While I can’t tell you much about the band, anyone can hear on the site’s Media section that their music is pretty dark and heavy (although I find the title “Fuck Me Back To Life” to be rather amusing). The music actually reminds me a bit of Type O Negative. This is certainly quite a change from anything Fiddler’s Green has ever done.
