Kai and Anja from Resonator

An introduction to Resonator

Resonator is a duo from Münster, Germany, who makes some of the most unique and creative music you can find. Kai typically writes music for theater and works on film soundtracks, while Anja is a formally trained musician who plays the accordion for the Resonator project. Ambient electronic music mixed with accordions is certainly not a common combination of sounds, but I can assure you it’s something very special when you hear it.

Enter the Red Room Diner

Red Room Diner is Resonator’s first full length album, originally released in 2003. It starts out with the mysterious sounding intro “Avis De Securite”. Coming in at under a minute in length, the song doesn’t really give you much of a clue about what you’re in for. This could be the introduction for anything, it’s very abstract. What’s to come? It might surprise you…

New album In Luft Geritzt by Dornenreich

Dornenreich - In Luft Geritzt

Dornenreich’s new album In Luft Geritzt is another album that got its release date pushed back. It was originally supposed to hit stores last week, but it’s finally on sale just now. Well, yesterday if you want to get technical. (I know, I still have to move the date in the releases page.)

Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find any samples from In Luft Geritzt. Their MySpace page only has clips from some of Dornenreich’s older albums. Not very good on their part, but I guess it will have to do for now. You can still get a pretty decent idea of how their “ambient black metal” music sounds. It’s actually nothing like what most people would consider ambient, but I’m coming up blank trying to think of a better term for it. What does it sound like to you?

Of course, if you are already a fan of Dornenreich, then you probably know what to expect and might not have a problem buying the album without hearing a bit of it first. In that case, AlphaMusic.de has In Luft Geritzt for the really great price of just 11.99 Euros. EMP.de is also showing a 2 disc limited edition version of the album, but doesn’t have a tracklist of it. If you know what’s on the second disc, please let us know in the comments section.

Night Falls shows Hecq becoming more ambient

Hecq - Night Falls

Hecq is the artist name chosen by Ben Lukas Boysen, a Berlin-based musician who produces intelligent dance music (IDM) and, more recently, ambient electronic music. He is also fairly well known for his remixes for artists such as Haujobb, Black Lung, Snog, and In Strict Confidence (you may remember the Hecq Destruxxion remix album of ISC’s Exile Paradise which was released in June of 2007), but his latest work is all his own.

Night Falls is the name of Hecq’s new album and it is the fulfillment of his ventures into a more ambient sound that were started on his previous album 0000. Initial reports from his website put the release in March, but Infrarot.de has the release date listed as April 18th. Either way, you can now find the album there or on Ant Zen’s mailorder site (Ant Zen is in collaboration with Hecq’s label, Hymen Records, because they don’t have a mailorder site of their own).

You can listen to some of the songs on Night Falls at a number of different places. I recommend going to Hecq’s page on Virb or the page specifically for the album. You can also visit his MySpace page to hear some music. Just a note, though: He doesn’t use the standard MySpace music player. Instead, there’s a flash player in the left column underneath the name and contact buttons. Don’t miss it.

Radio Goethe takes us to the edge of the German music world

Radio Goethe podcast

Using the Radio Goethe podcast as his vehicle, Arndt guides us on a journey into the world of German music, taking us a little bit further each week. I have been listening to the broadcast for many years now but there are still so many musicians I have not heard of. We have some examples of these on this week’s program, as we head towards one of those poorly-lit corners that people often hear rumors about but have never quite ventured into. I’m talking about atmospheric ambient music, a genre that sometimes teeters on the edge of being music at all. It’s very ethereal and perhaps even a bit spiritual, so you may soon feel yourself become weightless and floating off into some unknown state of mind. Take a ride with Radio Goethe this week and enjoy this unique experience.

Gemstones by Deep Imagination is out now

Deep Imagination - Gemstones

Deep Imagination is the electronic ambient project of Art of Infinity founder Thorsten Sudler. Yesterday, he announced that the project’s second album Gemstones has just been released. While there are only 4 new tracks, the album is built up with several live songs and remixes of older songs, bringing the total to 10 tracks that play for just about an hour. The CD also comes with a bonus DVD containing a music video for the song “Planetary System” and some concert footage from 2005.

The main feature of the album is definitely the “Gemstones” section which is made up of the last 3 songs of the CD. Inspired by a visit to a museum, the songs make you feel as if you are somehow floating through a massive cave structure, mysterious natural beauty all around you. You can download a full-length MP3 of “Gemstones Part 3 (Continuance)” from the Art of Infinity website.

You can also listen to more songs from Syngate.net where you can also buy the CD and DVD combo online. Or if you prefer, Musiczeit.com has the album available to download in both MP3 or FLAC versions.

Ambient electronica on Radio Goethe this week

Radio Goethe podcast

Even though my roots are in industrial and metal, I’ve had an increasing interest in ambient electronic music over the past couple years. This week’s Radio Goethe podcast really appeals to that side of me. As I sit here writing this, I am already enjoying the calm, atmospheric sounds of the synthesizers. They are drawn out here for your enjoyment, too. If you’re feeling stressed out, this podcast will help you relax. And despite what looks like a short playlist, these 8 songs actually slightly overshoot the 1 hour timeframe of the podcast, so there’s certainly no lack of good music here.

As always, you can download an MP3 of the podcast on iTunes by doing a search for Radio Goethe. Or of you prefer, you can stream the file by clicking the “Listen to the latest show” button at the top of the Radio Goethe website.

Ulrich Schnauss concert review

Ulrich Schnauss just finished up the final scheduled date on his tour across North America last night, but I guess that simply wasn’t enough. Schnauss has just announced he will be doing yet another gig in Costa Mesa, California, only this time it’s a free show! The concert is scheduled for tonight at 11 PM, so you still have a few hours if you’re in the area. Just head to the World Gallery at 1980 Placentia Ave. in Costa Mesa, CA, 92627. Hurry!

A phenomenal performance by Ulrich Schnauss

Ulrich Schnauss concert review

I originally ordered 4 tickets in advance to see Ulrich Schnauss last night at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City, expecting 3 of my friends and I to go, and possibly one more who might join and pay at the door. As it turned out, our little group ended up becoming 10 people by the time we were in the venue and enjoying the show. Dinner in the city took a bit longer than expected, so we finally showed up a little after 9 PM (doors opened at 8, first opener went on at 9) and hung out in the downstairs lounge for a while telling stories of old memories. Unfortunately, we missed Soundpool, the first band to play.

We headed upstairs to where the concert was around 10. After wandering around for a bit trying to find a good spot, we ended up right in front on the right side of the stage. The other 2 opening bands, Elika and Mahogany, were both pretty good, combining guitar-driven indie rock with electronic ambient music. I happened to turn to my side for a moment and noticed that Ulrich Schnauss was standing almost directly behind me wearing an Atari Teenage Riot shirt. I always like it when the main act is in the audience appreciating the openers.

Mahogany ended at around 11:30 and Ulrich disappeared up the backstage stairs to go get ready. His setup basically consisted of a keyboard, a laptop computer running Ableton Live, a few synthesizer racks, and about a million miles of wiring. There was also a single guitarist that set up on the other side of Ulrich’s table.

Ulrich Schnauss formally took the stage at exactly midnight to huge applause. He sat down in front of his equipment and began playing while psycahdelic film clips were projected from the soundbooth in the back of the room, casting a perfect silhouette of him and his electronics on the screen behind the stage. The entire crowd seemed to go silent as the first ethereal tones surged through the miles of wire, out the speakers, and filled the air. Then as the songs got louder and more intense, everyone started moving around and really enjoying themselves.

For the first part of the set, the songs flowed continually from one to the next without breaking in between. Some songs were louder and crazier than others, but there was always some kind of sound eminating from somewhere. Ulrich Schnauss played probably a half dozen songs or so before he paused to bring out his guitarist before playing “Shine”, the second song on his current album Goodbye. This was an absolutely stunning performance. The combination of acoustic guitar and ambient electronics sounded just beautiful, it’s no wonder the ongoing sounds came to a stop for this. It really set the song apart. “Shine” was also the only song that had vocals the entire show, provided superbly by the guitarist.

The set continued with a few more songs, each one getting a little bit faster and a little bit louder than the one before, until “Medusa” when the guitarist came back. But this time, he was playing an electric guitar over Ulrich’s infinitely layered soundscape. The music grew louder and louder, converging into solid walls of sound that came out at you. By the end of “Medusa”, Ulrich was frantically twisting knobs and pounding wildly on the keyboard while his guitarist was on the ground grinding the strings across every surface he could find. I’ve seen and heard bands do all they could to create the most distorted sounds possible, but this was like all of the sonic chaos and distortion in the universe came together and struck the stage in a thunderous roar. I have never heard such a disturbingly awesome sound before, and I don’t think I ever will again. Ulrich gave the keyboard one last swipe, probably hitting every key on it, and the guitarist dropped his guitar and they walked off stage. The sound continued.

After a minute or two, Ulrich Schnauss re-appeared on stage. In a single Godlike push of a button he shut off the thunder. He spoke for a moment, thanking the crowd and his opening bands, and then returned to his seat at the keyboard. The last few songs were much more calm. He played my favorite song from his album A Strangely Isolated Place, “Clear Day” and a few others. After these last few songs, he walked off stage without a word. As I walked down the side stairway back to the lounge below, I noticed him standing in the corner so I talked with him for a minute and thanked him for such an amazing show. Not only is Ulrich a phenomenal musician, he’s also a really nice guy.

If you haven’t had the chance to see Ulrich Schnauss live in concert yet, I strongly recommend that you go take the opportunity to do so. He’s still on tour in the United States and Canada until the beginning of October, so check out his tourdates to see when he will be in your area. You won’t be disappointed.

Relax and enjoy The Art of Infinity

The Art of Infinity

A few days ago, I received an email from Thorsten who is a musician with the ambient music project The Art of Infinity. The music they are making is really quite beautiful, with influences ranging from Pink Floyd to Brian Eno to Enya. They have 2 albums to date, New Horizon and Dimension Universe, and are currently working on their third. Endless Future is expected to be released sometime in the Autumn this year, so it shouldn’t be too long until we start hearing more news about it. Until then, you can sit back, relax, and listen to some of their older work on the band’s MySpace page. They have 2 songs posted there, or you can listen to a medley of several song samples blended together.

Achtung! Ulrich Schnauss LIVE in North America!

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

I know where I’m going to be this Friday night. In New York’s beautiful Bowery Ballroom listening to the ethereal electronic sounds of Ulrich Schnauss! Anybody who knows me knows I’ve been on a huge Schnauss binge lately, so I was thrilled when I read his latest MySpace Bulletin announcing the start of his tour. I have no idea how I missed the tourdates (which were apparently announced on August 22nd) until now, but I’m very glad I didn’t miss them entirely.

Anyway, just to recap, Ulrich Schnauss released his latest album Goodbye back on July 10th. Now that the album has been released, Ulrich plans to shift gears and focus less on electronics and more on an indie type sound, so this may be the last time you get to hear him play his electronic work live.
