Leichtmatrose sails melodramatic seas

What do you get when you combine electro, dramatic pop, sailor imagery and a handsome, distantly androgyne frontman with a fascinating voice and spice the whole thing up with Joachim Witt’s artistic guidance? The correct answer is Leichtmatrose, who are all about “melodramatic sailorpop” as they themselves call it. In the end, Leichtmatrose actually sounds a whole lot like a poppier, softer Wolfsheim, down to the Heppner-esque vocal work of the singer. Luckily, they still don’t sound like is a cheap ripoff of Wolfsheim, but indeed have a very distinctive, own sound. You can sample just that on Leichtmatrose’s MySpace where they have six lengthy clips, showcasing the band’s range quite well. You can also check out the brand-new video for Herztransplantation, or the earlier Sexi ist tot.
Leichtmatrose’s debut album Gestrandet will be out on April 22nd and doesn’t really seem to be available yet anywhere, but in the meantime you might want to support the band by getting their already available digital singles Sexi ist tot (which actually managed to reach #7 in the Deutsch Alternative Charts at the time of its release!) and Leichtmatrosen haben’s schwer / Herztransplantation. They’re both available at various digital stores, like Musicload.de and iTunes.

Is this site still active? It’s been a while since anything has been posted. I know In Extremo has announced a new live DVD and released it since the last post on this site…

Yeah, we indeed have been real quiet for the last… What, five months?! Ehh. Sorry everyone, you know how these things go… A lot of things have happened. As for my part, pretty soon after this post I got my first job, and that took more of my time and energy than I ever thought it could. I quit the job some time ago because I started my civil service (compulsory in Finland, it’s that or the army), and it’ll last for 11 more months. I’ll have to see if it’ll be possible to write at least something when the actual work service rolls around - right now it’s pretty much impossible. We’ll see. And Greg? I’m afraid to say I haven’t been in contact with him for quite a while. Last time I checked he was having a lot of trouble finding work because of the recession and I think he was going to move or something. It’s been maybe four or three months since those emails, so I have nothing solid on him at the moment… Will Germaniac rise again after everything gets sorted out? I hope so. There’s just a gigantic, horrifying mass of releases I’d love to write about. Thanks for all the kind words, and sorry for just kind of dropping dead with no notice! I’ve had to write something like this in here for ages, but for some reason I’ve just always postponed it, hoping that I’d post some news instead.

Well, I understand. Hope you and Greg will be both fine and with nice high-payment jobs soon, so we see some more news from ya
Good luck!

Sigh… this site was the best site available for finding out information and news for German artists. I can’t even begin to count how many bands I discovered from this site. Leichtmatrose being one of them. As far as entertainment news went this site was by far the most relevant site out there for me. I hope it comes back into service one day… I would even pay for updates and news on my favorite German and other European bands. This and Radiogoethe were the Holy Grail of discovering new and exciting music (at least I still have Radiogoethe). Living in Canada it’s hard to discover European bands and find news on them. Thanks for all your hard work in the past! (And hopefully future again someday!)

Allthough maybe a bit to pop for the most viewers we started our website http://www.europopmusic.eu a year ago to promote European pop and rockmusic mostly sung in the native tongue. I guess it’s not only Germany but in respons to Kevin it may be a way to stay up to date just a bit. We try to combine our full time jobs with hosting and maintaining the site so bare with us if we’re not up to date with everything that goes on.
And the encyclopedia is a work in progress. But we’ll get there.
