Nena does an album of coversongs

Nena, the German singer most famous here in the USA for her hit “99 Red Balloons” from back in the 80s, is releasing a new album this Friday, September 28th. The double-disc album Cover Me will consist entirely of coversongs. You will hear pop remakes of international superstars as well as little-known German bands, all on the same album. Some of the musicians Nena covers are Deichkind, Ideal, Udo Lindenberg, Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan, Moby, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, and Pink Floyd.
I saw the video for “Mach Die Augen Auf” and wasn’t too impressed. But then again I don’t usually listen to pop music, German or otherwise. Maybe you’ll like it. Have a look.

Well, I’m not much of a Nena fan, but I love Moby…I’ll have to hear at least that one!

I’ve seen the video of “Mach Die Augen Auf”, and I liked it. Her voice sounds “enchanting” while the music has a trance/techno feel. I believe Nena’s music is a breath of fresh air in the R&B/hiphop dominated music in the US. Listening to Nena in the past few years is like hearing a Moby-produced track with Nena’s vocals (try watching the “Ich Kann Nix Dafur” video and you’ll see what I mean). Which to me is terrific!
I think I was 12 when “99 Luft/Red Balloons” was on top of the world. I’ve been a fan ever since. I am impressed that Nena still sounds great and still looks beautiful after all these years. Her music has managed to evolve with the times, very much like Madonna has.
I’d buy her CD/DVD anytime over most of the “pop princesses/queens” here in the US.
This new CD sounds very interesting. I’d love to listen to how she covers the English songs. I don’t know if it will eventually be widely released by a major label here in the US - but I am hoping it will. The current generation of music loving-youths here in the US should be given the chance to enjoy the music of a great artist like Nena.

I agree, Nena’s music is better than the pop you will find in America. It’s still “pop” but a different kind of pop. And there are some bands she has covered which I really enjoy, like Moby for example. The sad thing, I think, is that her music seems to be under-appreciated these days, after her one super big hit “99 Red Balloon”… But maybe this one will bring back some more fame. Let’s see…

Greg…like you, I do wish that this new CD will be a big commercial success here in the USA. I can see it happening because the CD has a lot of English songs, and there is no female performer in the US aside from Madonna and a few others who are as talented as Nena K. But before anything else, may I ask if you are aware if this CD will be released by a major label here in the US? I’ve been waiting to hear this.
